To decide which applications Shopify to install or remove, start with an observable need, then examine access, costs, dependencies, and exit conditions. A useful application should solve a task that you can test. An application that has become useless should not be randomly removed if it still carries a form, a delivery rule or necessary data. Prepare a proof of operation before installation and a replacement acceptance testing before removal.
Start with the inventory of present applications, with a manager and real usage. Shopify allows you to review their billing information, privacy, permissions, extensions and pixels in the administration.[12] This information helps with diagnosis, but a platform inventory does not replace examining the concrete effects on your store.
Key points
A rating or popularity does not prove suitability. Check the features already available before adding an app. Review data access and actual billing. Organize the export and dependencies before removal, then test the route and remaining costs after uninstallation.
Applications Shopify: write the need before selection
Describe the task: display a notice, collect a specific request, organize an offer or synchronize information. Write down the expected behavior, who is responsible for it, and the evidence that will validate it. “Improve conversion” is too broad a goal to choose an app without a storyline.
Then check the functions of the theme, platform and applications already present. An additional extension may create a duplicate without resolving the original defect. If the problem comes from missing data or a poorly understood setting, start by correcting it.
The guide to the choice of a CMS and its maintenance needs helps to frame responsibilities and outputs. In an already chosen Shopify store, the arbitration here concerns each extension and the dependencies it adds.
Prepare a representative test before installation. For a form, define the necessary fields, errors, and request destination. W3C recommends understandable wording, instructions and notifications, as well as collection limited to necessary data.[33] The presence of a pretty component does not prove these qualities.
Inventory applications and their effects
For each application, note the developer, the internal manager, the use and the areas concerned. Distinguish between display in the theme, business rules, synchronization, retained data and advertising tracking. An application can have several effects, only one of which appears in the store.
Shopify documents Extensions, Functions, and Pixel maps when available on the application information page.[12] Review them before assigning a bug to the theme. A delivery or discount rule can depend on an active function rather than a visible block.
Note useful versions or configurations, external connections and who has access. If an application was installed by a former service provider, find the contractual information and the destination of the data without asking for passwords to be sent by email.
Also check the observed usage. An application without a visible block can still synchronize data; a regularly opened application may not provide the necessary functionality. Do not deduce its usefulness from the number of visits to its interface alone.
Review access and privacy
Shopify allows you to view the areas that certain third-party applications can access, their permissions and their recent activity. The documentation indicates, however, that this tracking does not cover applications created by Shopify in the same way.[12] An absence of visible detail must therefore be interpreted with its perimeter.
Review the developer's privacy information and policy. Ask concrete questions: what data is needed for the service, where is it sent, who accesses it and how can it be retrieved or deleted? Have the responses analyzed when personal data is involved.
The CNIL presents compliance as a process to begin and maintain, with an action plan and data protection reflexes.[34] Installing an application or reading its policy does not constitute overall proof of compliance of your store. The decision must cover your use, your purposes and your organization.
Also be careful with diagnostic evidence. Shopify warns that shared Functions logs may contain sensitive personal information.[12] Check the recipient and content before sharing. A capture useful for support must be limited to what is necessary, without unnecessarily exposing a customer file.
Read billing and limits
Report recurring charges, cycle, usage charges and scheduled changes. Shopify indicates that these items can be viewed in the application information.[12] Do not only remember the price highlighted on the sales sheet, which may not describe your actual configuration.
Check the thresholds and functions included in the chosen plan. An app can fit the need while adding a variable cost that your team needs to monitor. Designate who receives alerts and who authorizes changes to the plan.
Shopify specifies that plan changes are managed in the application or by its developer, and that a subscription billed outside Shopify must be managed directly with the developer.[12] The suppression in the administration should therefore not be taken as proof that all external commitments have ended.
The documentation also indicates that some usage spending limits can be increased from administration, but not reduced by the same route.[12] Check the procedure and consequences before modifying a ceiling. A risk setting should not be changed simply to make an alert disappear.
Prepare output before uninstalling
Identify what data to keep and what functions to replace. Ask the developer for export options, formats and deletion conditions. A promise “your data remains available” must be specified: which ones, for how long, with what access and in what format?
Then prepare the replacement on the affected area. If the application receives requests, test the new form until they are received. If it carries a business rule, replay the edge cases. Retain useful settings and proof of operation before removal.
After uninstallation, examine the affected theme, contents and links. Do not delete remaining code without knowing its dependencies. Some elements may have been added manually or reused elsewhere. Get the competent person involved with an accurate statement.
Also check external connections, subscription and data at the provider according to the applicable conditions. Local uninstallation, billing stop and data deletion are different effects. Ask for appropriate confirmation for each person before declaring the outing complete.
Grille install, retain, replace or remove
| Status | Possible decision | Proof required |
|---|---|---|
| Specific need without existing function | Install after review | Successful scenario and access included |
| Function already satisfied elsewhere | Do not add | Comparison of current uses |
| Useful and controlled application | Keep | Responsible for monitoring costs and maintenance |
| Useful need but inappropriate access or cost | Replace after study | Alternative tested and output prepared |
| Function no longer needed | Remove with acceptance testing | Dependencies and processed data |
| Unknown usage | Examine before decision | Effects and owner identified |
| External billing | Manage separately | Cancellation or condition confirmed |
| Data at the supplier | Treat their future | Export and deletion examined |
The grid avoids two excesses: installing each new feature and deleting each inconspicuous application. A decision may remain pending when its use or release has not yet been established.
Fictitious example: two forms for the same need
This example is fictitious. An imaginary store discovers two form applications. The first receives technical requests, while the second was installed for a former commercial operation. Some of the pages still use the second without a clearly identified manager.
The team inventories the pages and destinations of requests. It prepares the necessary replacement, exports the useful information according to the supplier's conditions and tests a submission from each entry. It also examines the costs and possible external subscription.
The withdrawal is only considered complete after checking the route and the exit effects. No performance gains or quantified savings are announced. Above all, the store has re-established a demand circuit for which it knows the dependencies and the person responsible.
Frequently asked questions
Can a highly rated app be installed without testing?
No. Reviews can help prepare questions, but they do not prove suitability for your topic, data, and tasks. Review access and plan, then run a representative scenario. Maintain the limits observed before using the application on important functions or on the collection of personal data.
Does uninstall always stop all charges?
Don't assume so. Shopify reminds that subscriptions billed off-platform are managed directly with the developer.[12] Check your cycle, the amounts already committed and the exit conditions. Request appropriate confirmation from the supplier and check the invoices concerned before declaring that all costs have been stopped.
Can we delete all associated code elements?
Only after examining their uses and dependencies. A manually added item can be shared with another function. Keep a working copy and have a targeted modification prepared by the competent person. Then replay the store scenarios; the absence of the application name does not prove that the route remains correct.
Decide with an inventory and a acceptance testing
Gather the applications, their uses and their effects, then choose a decision by need. Install or remove with trail proofs and explicit exit conditions. The 4SYSTEM services can help coordinate this review without promising that an app catalog will make the store better.
