A brief SEO is a document which specifies who the article is addressed to, what question it must resolve, what information is available and how the text will be validated. The main keyword is used to name the topic, not to dictate each sentence. Start with the reader's need, then prepare questions, sources and limitations: the writer will be able to construct an answer instead of filling in a list of terms.
Key points
- The brief specifies the editorial choices and the editor's instructions, rather than a quota of keywords.
- Reader questions determine plan.
- Missing information must be reported before writing.
- Validation focuses on the usefulness, accuracy and consistency of the content.
Define a precise writing instruction
“Write an article about our packaging” leaves too many decisions implicit. Specify the reader, its context and the expected help. An e-commerce manager who prepares his shipments does not have the same questions as an individual who sends an occasional package.
Add the company's objective, without confusing it with the expected response: explaining a choice, reducing repetitive questions or presenting a relevant offer. Also indicate the excluded subjects. The editor must know what can be covered here and what belongs on another page.
Google invites you to produce content intended for Internet users, useful enough to help them achieve their goal. This principle is reflected in the brief by a result sentence: “After reading, the person will be able to…”
Prepare the fields that make the brief usable
Questions and the provisional plan
Collect questions actually received by customer service or sales, if available. Otherwise, propose clearly identified working questions as hypotheses. Arrange them according to the order in which the reader must understand and then decide.
Each section must have a function: define, verify, compare or explain a step. A subtitle that does not carry any useful questions may be deleted. The plan remains modifiable if the research reveals a limitation or forgotten essential information.
Sources, evidence and reservations
Associate intended assertions with a searchable resource: official documentation, datasheet, terms of service, or authorized internal data. Specify what each source allows us to say and what it does not demonstrate.
An invented example must be announced as fictitious. The possibilities of a product must be checked. A price missing from the file must not be invented. If an estimate is useful, identify it as such and document its assumptions before validation. Designate the person capable of confirming the business details and indicate the points that block validation.
The reader's vocabulary
Remember a main expression and a few terms necessary for the explanation. If you have research volumes, provide their source and context. Otherwise, present these terms as working hypotheses. Separate wording variations from subtopics: another way of saying the same thing does not necessarily warrant a new section.
The SEO guide of Google specifies that its systems include queries without finding all the exact terms on the page. It is therefore not necessary to include all possible variants. Use words that really shed light on the topic.
Fictional example: prepare an article on choosing a shipping box
This brief is illustrative. It does not correspond to a client of 4SYSTEM nor to a demand study.
- Reader: manager of a small online store that prepares its packages.
- Central question: what information should be gathered to choose a box adapted to the product?
- Main expression: “choose a shipping box”, used editorially.
- Questions to be addressed: useful dimensions, manufacturer information, carrier constraints and checks before ordering.
- Sources to obtain: sheets of packaging sold and instructions from the carrier concerned.
- Out of scope: recommend specific resistance without documentation or guarantee absence of damage.
- Validation: the reader knows what information to check and what points to ask the supplier.
The editor thus receives a concrete mission. It should not artificially repeat “box”, “carton” and “packaging” in each paragraph. If the documentation is missing, the brief provides for confirmation of the information or withdrawal of the recommendation, rather than inventing a response.
Set understandable validation criteria
Prepare proofreading before ordering the text. Check that the answer appears at the beginning, that the sections follow the need, that the facts are supported, and that the example is honestly presented. Ask for a descriptive title and a short description that is faithful to the content.
The length can be used to frame an order, but does not constitute proof of quality SEO. Google indicates not preferring a particular number of words. A redundant section is not useful because it allows you to reach a threshold.
Checklist before sending the brief
- Name the reader and its context.
- Write the central question and the expected result.
- Define the company objective and exclusions.
- Organize the questions into a provisional plan.
- Justify the terms used without inventing volumes.
- Attach sources and report missing information.
- Provide useful links to existing verified pages.
- Designate the business validator and the review criteria.
Limitations and common errors
A brief does not replace either business expertise or verification of sources. Common mistakes include copying a competing plan, demanding length without reason, or treating a tool score as permission to publish.
Also avoid repetition quotas which make the text artificial. Google classifies the accumulation of keywords intended to manipulate results as spam practices. The brief should encourage precision, not arbitrary density.
Frequently asked questions
How long should the brief be given?
Enough to clear up the ambiguities. Keep decisions in the main document and attach detailed resources rather than recopying everything.
Should secondary keywords be provided?
You can provide relevant vocabulary, explaining its role. Do not impose a mechanical insertion of each expression.
What to do if a source is missing?
Report the point to be confirmed and its manager. Remove or qualify the statement if proof cannot be obtained.
Next step
Resume a planned item order and complete these fields before sending it. To situate this work within broader support, consult the services of 4SYSTEM. The first deliverable remains a brief understandable by its writer and the person responsible for validating it.
