Matching keywords Google Ads determines which searches your ads can compete on. It does not replace either the definition of your offer or the qualification of requests. For a service provider who rents professional equipment without selling second-hand equipment, the useful choice consists of comparing each intention to an available service, then checking what the visible searches actually reveal. This guide is about positive keywords for search campaigns.

The exact controls the meaning or intent, not a sequence of characters. The expression expands around the intended meaning [47]. Before heading out to sea, check your measurements and your steering. Your decision must link offer, query, trigger keyword and proof of control.

Chosen keyword, actual search: separate the two

Keyword is the term you add to an ad group; the query is what the person enters into the engine. The ratio of search terms makes it possible to link these two objects, which are not necessarily identical [48].

Before choosing a connection, gather the list of equipment actually rented, their professional uses, the areas served, the collection or delivery methods and the available arrival pages. Also note the missing offers, for example second-hand sales, repairs or rental to individuals, depending on your activity.

Add an operational definition of useful request: a contact seeking to rent suitable equipment, in a covered area, with acceptable conditions. A form sent remains a measurable event; its commercial relevance must be assessed separately.

Keyword match Google Ads: exact, phrase, or broad

Correct, with brackets like [location ponceuse professionnelle], aims for research with the same meaning or the same intention. It provides the strongest relative control, without requiring character identity [47]. Close variants may include singular, plural, accents or abbreviations. [48].

Phrase, with quotes like "location ponceuse professionnelle", covers searches that include the meaning of the keyword. This meaning can be implicit, and the request more precise. It is therefore not simply a matter of keeping a textual expression intact between added words [47].

Large, entered without a delimiter, can cover searches related to the keyword without containing its direct meaning. Google can notably consider the user's recent searches, the content of landing pages and components, as well as other keywords in the group [47].

Do not automatically stack the same keywords across all three types. The expression covers searches for the exact equivalent; the broad includes those of expression and exact, with additional research [47].

A choice grid for professional rental

Entirely fictitious example: a service provider offers the rental of professional floor sanders and does not sell any used equipment. The formulations below illustrate possible choices, not observed diffusions.

Type and exampleControl soughtUseful signal to choose itWatch point
Correct: [location ponceuse professionnelle]Isolate a defined rental intention, while keeping the meaning variants. The equipment is offered and has a dedicated page.A similar formulation remains to be qualified: the brackets do not guarantee commercial suitability.
Expression: "location ponceuse professionnelle"Cover more specific needs around the rental service. The desired use corresponds to the material and conditions available.Additional details may make demand inconsistent with supply.
Large: location ponceuse professionnelleExplore associated intentions, beyond the formulations already retained. The measurement of requests and their business qualification are verified.Monitor non-catalog searches and conversions with no commercial value.

This grid is a decision aid proposed here, not a rule Google nor a reason to duplicate keywords.

Check measurement before widening

Google indicates that it is essential to associate the broad with Smart Bidding, so that the auctions take into account the signals specific to each search at the time of the auction [47]. This advice is not an automatic validation of your targeting.

In the method proposed here, first prepare the measurement: expected action, page concerned, triggering the conversion and qualification after reception. For our fictitious rental company, an availability request can be sent, without being automatically assimilated to a relevant rental.

Then check that the selected action is triggered on the correct event and that a test does not create a duplicate. Keep track of the test, its consent conditions and the parameters monitored.

If this string is questionable, correct it before the large test. A recorded conversion does not prove that you can satisfy demand.

Read the report without confusing adjustment and reconciliation

In Google Ads, open Campaigns, then Search Terms in the Insights & Reports submenu. Add the “Keyword” column, which is not displayed by default. It identifies the keyword that triggered the ad [48]. Also keep the campaign and ad group context.

Pay attention to the correspondence column of the report: it describes the connection between search and keyword, not necessarily the saved setting. A search identical to location ponceuse professionnelle can appear there in exact form while the trigger keyword is configured in large [48].

The report is not exhaustive. Certain insufficiently frequent searches are omitted to respect the confidentiality standards of Google; insights can aggregate them without exposing the queries themselves [48].

Note the period examined and export the rows used. An absence of off-topic searches in this file does not demonstrate its absence throughout the broadcast.

Qualify the intentions before modifying the delivery

Illustrative hypotheses for our rental company, without presuming that a given type will trigger them:

  • “professional sander rental for parquet” : consistent intention if the material is suitable for this medium. Check the equipment and the associated page.
  • “used professional sander” : a purchase intention is probable. Reread the entire wording before deciding, rather than judging a single word.
  • “construction site sander” : the acquisition mode remains ambiguous. Look for available details and keep that intention in mind if you can't decide.

For a visible line, check in this order the suitability for the offer, the trigger keyword, the landing page then the quality of the request, when it is known. This reading avoids confusing a targeting problem with a page that is too vague.

A tightening of positive keywords does not replace an exclusion. Negative matches work differently [47]. To process a non-offer intent, use the negative keyword guide, devoted to the choice of precise exclusions.

Validate a change with an usable trace

Apply a repeatable sequence to each change:

  1. Collect rental scope, current setting, visible queries and conversion definition.
  2. Control commercial intent, then the link between search, keyword and page, before examining the measurement.
  3. Decide to conserve, tighten or explore. Formulate the business reason and isolate the change so you can read it again.
  4. Validate the saved setting, test the measurement and schedule a new reading of the report. Keep the export and approval of the offer manager.

Here is a completed log for the fictitious case, without diffusion observations or assumed results:

Scope: rental of professional sanders.

Hypothesis: “construction site sander” does not specify the method of acquisition.

Proposed decision: keep this intention in observation and specify the location on the page.

Expected evidence: export of the setting, rereading of the offer, documented conversion test, new review of visible requests.

Criteria for review: explicit purchase intentions or requests inconsistent with the hardware.

Status: illustrative proposal, not validated for distribution.

Your internal validation must bring these pieces together. It covers the controlled perimeter, without transforming invisible searches into known data.

Frequently asked questions

Why do some searches not show any trigger keywords?

Dynamic Search Ads and Shopping campaigns do not use keywords for targeting. The report may therefore display a blank cell in the keyword column and an “Exact” match. [48]. First identify the campaign type. Do not attempt to correct this line by arbitrarily adding a keyword.

Why does research from a partner have unusual wording?

On Search Network partners, ads may appear on directories or pages linked to a search. The terms shown may be longer or presented differently depending on the site [48]. Segment the report by network, then evaluate the direction of the line before treating it as a typical search for Google.

Does an English query require an English keyword?

A multilingual user can see an ad in a language different from that of their search, if Google judges that they understand this language [47]. An English query therefore does not automatically justify a new keyword. Check the linguistic targeting, the understanding of the offer and the ability of your team to process the request in this language.

Conclusion: document before expanding

Start with an ad group and hardware family. Gather the offer, export the visible queries with their trigger keyword, then populate the grid and log before any extension. If you wish to compare this diagnosis to your organization, the digital marketing services from 4SYSTEM can serve as a starting point for a discussion on your measurement and your targeting choices.
